Turbulence

Turbulence (Oil on Ampersand, 32×24)

Deep blues and violets move across Turbulence in sweeping, layered forms, creating a landscape that feels caught between chaos and direction. Jagged shapes rise and fold into one another while a circular current pulls the eye inward. At its center, a small opening of light emerges from the surrounding intensity.

The painting explores the experience of being drawn into an emotional spiral. Thought and feeling can gather momentum until they begin to distort the world around us, making it difficult to see beyond the immediacy of what we are experiencing. Here, that intensity becomes physical, expressed through repetition, fractured forms, and restless movement.

Yet the spiral does not lead only toward darkness. At its center is light. The same motion that suggests being pulled inward also creates a path through the turbulence, offering a point of focus within the disorder. The light is small in relation to everything surrounding it, but its presence changes the direction of the painting.

Turbulence reflects on the possibility of moving through emotional intensity rather than escaping it. Even when the way forward feels obscured, there can still be something to move toward. Within the spiral, the light remains, suggesting hope, clarity, and the possibility of finding our way through.
