Layers

Layers (Oil on Ampersand, 24×32, 2023)

The landscape gave way to dramatic desert rock, where layers of stone rose in deep red bands. The canyon walls appear dense and solid, their surfaces shaped by centuries of wind, water, and erosion. Warm reds and rust tones dominate the land, while a softer sky stretches above the horizon, creating a quiet contrast between earth and atmosphere.

The rock formations reveal their history through visible layers that run across the surface of the canyon. Each band of color marks a different moment in geological time, slowly compressed and exposed through the long processes of nature. The painting draws attention to these strata, allowing the viewer to see the passage of time written directly into the land.

Desert landscapes often feel timeless, yet they are constantly changing. Wind and weather continue to shape the cliffs and mesas, gradually revealing the structures hidden within the rock. The layers become both a physical feature of the landscape and a symbol of the slow movement of time.

In this way, the canyon stands as a reminder of the immense timescales that shape the earth. The exposed rock becomes a natural record of transformation, where each layer reflects a chapter in the long geological story of the landscape.
